2 meter OB rule - 2004/11/15 23:02
So, the PDGA has decided to remove the 2 meter rule. Do you think DeLa should keep it? Does it make the course too easy? What do you think the tournament TD's will do.
I personally will keep playing with the 2 meter OB rule during my practice rounds. I think the risk factor would go away on too many shots if it was removed.

The 2 meter rule is irrelavant. It's set to expire by default Jan 1st.
All that really matters is that everyone play the same rule.
Given that Treees are what make a golf course interesting, there is no good reason to make them more of an obstacle than they already are.
Would you really start throwing your disc inot trees if there were no 2 meter rule?
The exceptions are things like hole 3 at Browns, or hole 4 (short) at Penn Valley, you have no choice but to throw in to the treess over the basket, the difference is some come down, some do not. That's just throwing the hole to luck, and that's a littel boring.

Your right, I probably won't change my throws. But I won't be as worried about, say going over the top on I-5, or trying for that ace on 15.
The question is, when it expires, will the tournaments that are held at dela 'course rule' it or not.
I suppose, after thinking about it, it doesn't really matter at dela. The elevation changes are really what cost the most strokes. Bouncing off of a tree and sailing over a cliff is much more likely to happen. http://www.santacruzdisc.com

FWIW...
My understanding, after listening to a PDGA radio segment on the topic, is that the 2 meter rule will be worded in such a way that it will be the Tournament Director's decision whether or not they want to use it. So at the beginning of the event the TD would announce whether or not the 2 meter rule was in effect. I haven't seen a draft of the new rule yet, but I am curious to see how they word it.

Yes. If there were no 2-meter rule and it was the best way to get close to the hole, yes I would throw at/into trees. This is using the rules to your best advantage to score, but it's not really in the spirit of the game, IMHO.
To me the 2-meter rule keeps the risk/reward scenario in effect on every shot, especially at courses like Dela. As long as I am a TD for any event, the 2-meter rule will be in effect.

I had been a little confused about the two meter rule, and sought information from the PDGA to help me understand it. In checking the rule book (online) I noticed that the two meter rule was just the same as last year. So I emailed the rules committee. Here's the response from Carlton Howard: "No changes until 2006. There are no new rules for 2005. The rules remain unchanged. A publishing deadline, and associated economic factors, forced us to punt until 2006. It was a Board decision. We should have new rules out for 2006. Thus, the 2 meter rule is still in effect. TDs can ask for a special condition, thereby waiving the 2 meter rule for their events, but absent of that...the penalty is still in effect." Thus, the 2-meter rule is still in effect for 2005. Keep it low, flat, and down the middle. Ed
