Re:Southwestern Team Tournament - 2005/12/06 12:53
No doubt SC sent great team of great players, and good people.
The point is though, that on paper, by Faultline and other tournaments, there we're more qualified people that were overlooked and that could be the difference between 1st & second place.
Therfor, IMHO, Santa Cruz did not send the objectively best team possible
That is a plain and simple fact. You can get all the data you need in moments from the NorCal site.
If you're really going to win the thing, the criteria should be published, transparent & objective.
If I'm not mistaken there is a printed, objective playoff system for all of the SD team? and that could very well be the difference between 1st & 2nd place.
Sorry Jack, but Burl is not from Santa Cruz.

I agree that it is timely Ed and if we can merely "touch" on it, that would be fine. However, I think this is the sort of topic that could easily take over a large portion of the meeting. I would prefer to see it brought up after all of the other items on the agenda have been addressed.
That's all I'm sayin'...

WOW John, you seem to feel pretty strong about this. Maybe it would be best to talk to someone in person instead of airing it out online for public viewing. Just My Honest Opinion.
You and Mark seem to think it is your right to play on Team Santa Cruz. It's not anyones right to play for Team Santa Cruz, it is a privledge to be selected by the team captain. It is his right to choose who he wants on the team. He may use what ever criteria he chooses to pick who he wants. It has nothing to do the DDGC other than we are all members. You do have the right to create your own team and select the players any way you want, even the way San Diego does. You also have the right to lobby Snapper and try getting your team invited to the tournament. "Good luck on that one". It is not a PDGA, DDGC or NorCal event it is a Invitational Team Tournament. It is for fun but taken very seriously. To get 2nd place was huge, it's basically winning since San Diego always wins. Not just my opinion but the facts. CJ

I don't think that John or Mark are insinuating that they wanted to be on the team.
They feel that certain qualifying criteria should be established rather than having one individual decide who should go and who shouldn't. If it's playing Pro, then it's playing Pro...that's fine...but let's establish that rather than imply it.
Having to meet certain criteria would also make it easier for a team captain to make decisions about who goes. Following the criteria makes it simple.
And in much the same way that the invitations to the Worlds work, there could be a "waiting list" to account for qualifiers who are not able to go.
Dave did a great job putting a team together this year and I know he actively solicited opinions from others to make the final calls.
One thing everyone should keep in mind though is that the purpose of an arguement or discussion is not to win, but to progress.
Keep your heads cool.

I may be wrong but I never saw anything in John or Mark's post saying that they think it is their right to play on the team. Mark asked how players for Team were selected. If the answer at that point would have been "captain's discretion" then I think nothing else would have been said about this, case closed.
But.....
If you're going to say that it's based on play in the Masters and Faultline and meeting other "criteria" (as was posted in this thread) you are then implying, IMHO, that it is open to anyone who plays well enough and meets the "criteria" specified. That is not the case and John pointed that out.
Bottom Line -> let the team captain answer the question. If you don't know exactly how the team was selected , don't say anything because it was that piece of information that started this whole mess in the first place.

Re: criteria for picking the Santa Cruz team. First, yes I believe there should be an established criteria for choosing the team. That however has not been the case in the past and it was beyond my means as a first year captain to establish one in time for this years event. In lieu of that let me explain how I chose this years team, and criteria I would recomend for future events. 1. A player must be a proffesional golfer in good standing with the PDGA. This is a proffesional tourney(money is the prize). If you are an am. that thinks they can beat the pros when it counts then you need to move up and prove it.2. You need to be a club member.3. You need to play in the local pro tourneys. The faultline is given more weight due to its close proximity to the team event. The team was picked almost exclusivly based on the results of that tourney.4. Since this is a team event you need to be able to represent the team by showing qualities of good sportsmanship. I wont take a team of whining bag kickers. 5. there needs to be a couple of spots left open to the discretion of the captain. I invited 5 players to play off for two spots. Those people included guys that cashed in the faultline,Matt, ChrisV. etc. I invited Jim Croutch to compete for one of those spots due to his past performance and his contribution to the club. I didnt however feel I could offer him an automatic spot because that would have meant not inviting someone who playe and cashed. Sorry Jim. I apologise to any one I may have overlooked. That being said I believe we took the best team ever and I am proud of how we played and how we represented Santa Cruz. Good job team Santa Cruz!
