Re:Tags 07/28/05 - 2005/08/03 16:30And, unfortunately, I do tend to play up, or down to my group, but I think this is one way to get over that.
Exactly!
Excellent points Stan. It really doesn't have anything to do with weather it's fun or not, at least to me? That is the beauty of the bagtag. It's fun either way, and you are 100% correct that it is a perfect place to practice such skills.
It's also why they probably have highest and lowest in the same group in some places.
I'm not saying anyones bad or wrong, just the dynamic as I see it. I'm sighting is basic Pshco-bio. If anyone wants to take it persoanlly, there's not a lot I can do about it. I didn't make the rules.
Perhaps the subject is too sublte for this forum? I don't know? but I'll give one last example. It happens to me often, and again just this AM.
I am driving down the highway. There is a car in front of me, and a bus in front of the car. My asumption is that the driver of the car ahead of me is motivated by his own drive, wherehe's going, and not the bus or anything else?
But when the bus pulls off to the shoulder of the road due to mechanincal issues? The driver car directly behind it seems to want to follow the bus? Maybe because it's on the same road? I don't quite know why humans do it? But then the driver realizes, this is not a good palce to pull off, nor in all likely hood where they were going, so they finally get back on the road and find their own way.
It's just a thing humans do. They tend, TEND, to do what they last see, or what last crosses their mind. We tend to follow each other. Just like birds and fish.
Unconsciously mind you.
If you haven't seen this kind of behavior in humans, I'm prone to think you would not be the most observant person? On the other hand, maybe your that guy driving the car? In which case you could explain to me how you get around from place to place witout running into a lot of stuff?

First I would like to say Thanks to all of you "Stand-Up" Open players who have patiently played with me, wow it's like your saints and I have been blessed, I hope you can continue to put up with my shitty putts and I hope I don't bring your game down for the big tournament.
Should I only converse with other "smart" people because I might get dumb talking to less intelligent folks?
pretty easy frickin answer there....
It may matter to some of you (hmmm), I have heard, that cannabis tends to make you alittle more "suggestable" and that would probably include visually.
As far as playing down or up, I know I play better when there is an "A" player in my group who has an encouraging expectation. That doesn't mean ANY player can't have the same encouraging expectation.
I have also played at Hellyer with people I just met, when they found out I mostly play dela, they expected me to be "good" and I actually played really well as a result (ok it was Hellyer), I played doubles as the "A" player! and shot +2 with a brand newbie. I did find out how all you "A" players must feel when you get stuck with a "C" player.
I have played BALL golf since I was 8, my grandparents owned a golf course and I can say without a doubt that unless its for a tournament, ball-golf "A" players don't mind playing with beginners as much as disc golf "A" players do.
There tends to be more of a spirit of encouraging expectation.
"Lets go man, I know you can make this shot, take your time...."
ITS A GAME!
Games are meant to be fun competition.
Maybe to make it more fun for the "Open" players we could_____(fill in blank) How about if the A players have to play "goofy hand"
anyone want the sport to grow?
Because believe it or not, if you want to grow the sport, the Pro players NOW will have to suck it up or play alone with small purses forever. How did YOU get there? Are you all just "naturals" who started playing pro from the beginning?
If you want to maybe someday win more than $5k for a World Championship and have Real Sponsorships, you better recruit and train better players to play with, who feel they have a chance to win. (otherwise, they don't enter for $150)
If you don't play with newer players, they won't get better very fast. Fewer players means less prize money, and more importantly, FEWER SPONSOR DOLLARS
If you not coming out to have fun and foster the development of the sport, then STAY HOME (or only play with other snotty bastiches
I wish I could make it out for a Thursday night, I get a kick out of watching where my original tag#31 ends up.
But Really, if you are so serious about your game that you can't stand to watch someone 3 putt, LOOK AWAY!!!! or Ask if they want some help with their putt???? (not pointing at anyone, but if the shoe fits....)
Is this the only sport where the teacher DOESN'T learn more than the student? or are the only real teachers just dumb?
And for the rest of us, if someone asks you if you want some help with your putt, say YES, it will make you better and we all need to get better
I have been playing for 2 years now. About 1.5 years ago, someone named Greg from Monterey played a round with me, at the time I only knew how to throw 2-finger, couldn't throw backhand 40', he asked me why I never throw backhand, I said I couldn't throw it very far, right then he said "oh! you just need to know the right technique, let me show you". So we sat there on 16 and threw both of our bags, then threw them back until I got it (sort of). I had played for six months EVERY shot 2-finger (actually 1-finger) cause noone showed me that shot.
That guy changed the potential of my whole game, and I started playing the game.
Stil waiting for that guy to show me the putt.....
ok thats it for my ramble, no offense to anyone.

Well, you'll all be sad to know that #117 won't be out there to be challenged this week (ha-ha)! I have a family thing going on.
As for all this psycho babble, I brought out my #43 two weeks ago knowing I'd never have it on my bag again. I enjoy playing with different people and challenging myself to play better. My friends don't play much anymore, so I try to come to club events when I'm home.
I could go one and suggest some handicap for the girls (all two of us), but I figure it is more about me and my level of play. It is fun to see the tags switch about.
Hopefully I'll be there next Thursday - Katie

It's interesting that, in general, a Pro may lament playing with an Am due to the Am's lack of skills, but I think the reverse is also true. Pros, in general, take a lot of time to make a shot, test the wind, wait for silence, etc. This is all ok--if everyone buys into it during a casual round. Usually Ams (and I am often guilty of this!) talk a lot, are loud, don't follow PDGA etiquette, etc.--but I think they have a different kind of fun from the Pros.
As I start to transition, I look forward to the extra challenge of facing far superior players, but I will miss the "looser" feel of the Am division.
And while I would tend to agree with the adage of "playing to the level of the competition", in individual sports I think it is slightly less true than in team sports. Not sure why, but from personal experience, I find that to be true.
BTW, I'm planning on being there tonight, with Katie's #43!
Oh--I already have a 2004 yr tag, that will likely never be used. I think moving to a system of tags that lack years is a good one. But it would be nice if locals can get the lower numbers, since they are more likely to play and keep the tags in the pool.
Adios, Steve-O
