Bag Tag Re-organization - 2005/07/13 13:26
I got the idea for Thursday night Tag from the Colarado Disc Golf Club. I contacted the individual who ran their tag nights to get more info about how it was done and he was very helpful. However, he did say that attendance varied, but usually not more than 12 players. With that in mind, the method he employs to run his bag tag nights works fine. And it works fine at Dela as well, but only if the number of players stays relatively low.

As I learned last week, it's virtually impossible to run it the same way with 20 people. So I've been thinking about it and I think I have a solution. I'm not going to get into details here, but we'll try it tomorrow night and see how it goes.

Just wanted to let y'all know I'm not sleeping on the job.

Does this mean that you still want that program? I should have one running on my laptop ready for tomorrow, with a palm version following for easier use at the course.

Oh yeah Stan...absolutely! I'm mainly referring to the number of players and getting them out on the course in a timely fashion. The other end of that is figuring out who gets what tags at the end.

I don't have any portable computerish devices so someone else (like yourself) would have to enable that portion of the program. That is to say..."take care of that" since I don't possess the tools...but I couldn't resist trying to use computerese to try and explain it.

I'll have my laptop to run it on. Hopefully by the next week I'll have a version that will run on your Tungsten, John. I'll make it available when it's done.

How about this?

1. Players who wish to play give their tag to the TD before the round. (No late entrants accepted.) TD writes their name and tag number down, and holds ALL tags until final distribution at the end of the round.

2. At an established cutoff time, the TD verifies the number of entrants against the number of tags, makes the groups, determines the starting holes, and hands out the scorecards. (Grouping lowest players together builds competition. Grouping highest with lowest builds mentoring.)

3. After the round, players turn in scorecards to the TD.

4. TD sorts the scores lowest to highest, cross-checks against the number of tags and distributes the tags one at a time.

5. TD holds tags for any player not present to accept. DNFs, missing or incorrect scorecards go to the end of the line and finish order is determined by TD. (No early tags, and nobody except the TD distributing tags.)

I realize this isn't a nifty program, but it does address a few vital items. The problem I saw last week was too many people touching the tags. The whole tourney was done with pencil and paper, and it could have worked fine if only one person was doing the figuring and handing out of the tags.
