thanks for picking up trash on hole #1, and for joining the 'butt eradication' campaign!
first off, i do believe the concept of 'stewardship' is 'basic' to our situation, given we are a volunteer organization.
when you speak of trash cans at lower DeLaVeaga, well, the city 'pays' somebody to empty those cans. unfortunately, we have to do it ourselves, and i think it is not fair to compare the two.
in my original response, i stated that there would be trash/recycling receptacles available at designated areas: #1, #7, #11....so it is not correct to say there are 'no trash/recycling areas'.
the decision to limit the areas, was based on the assumption that most people will wait until they reach an area to dispose of their waste products. what sense does it make to have trash cans on both hole#5 and hole#7? they are not more than 50 feet apart, and the point of contention was proven recently, when the receptacles on hole #5 were overflowing, with trash spilling on to the ground. what an eyesore it was. since the receptacles were removed on hole #5, i have not seen any abuse of this nature.
i think it is fair to assume that those people who 'will' pick up trash, are more likely to pick up a few items [like you did on hole#1], then to expect that they will empty a heavy beer bottle laden trash can. which is proven by the fact that the receptacles are often overflowing.
i also think that it is unfair to claim that the decision to reduce the number/locations of receptacles is a 'mistake', when you haven't even given it a chance to see if it pans out.
when club decisions are made, they are not done without the realization that the decision may not work. give it time; if it doesn't work, then it will be time to rethink the idea.
the real problem is that no one really wants to pick up some other persons trash, and it is complicated more when it is a stinky, heavy trash can full of empty beer bottles [for the most part]. do you want to empty them all of the time? probably not. i recently emptied the 3 cans on hole #10, the cans on #5 and the can on #1....it was not pretty, and i wouldn't choose to want to do it again. the reason i did not return the can to hole #1, was that i was fairly disgusted with the fact that people will just throw their trash on the ground next to the container, and therefore, did not think it deserved to have a can returned to that location. now if you want to put a can there, and will empty it everytime it gets full, be my guest.

Hi All,
While speaking to Daviar last night, I mentioned that I was REALLY surprised that the overflowing recycling bins near the dumpster have not been pilfered by the bandits that stole from Annie's bins. Dave and I thought there's at least $20-$40 bucks in recycling cash there. The thieves have been slacking off...
But as Marty points out, who from the club wants to go through it all?
Yesterday I picked up two candy bar wrappers--fresh ones, right next to the tee pads. I hope it is not a case where someone just dropped the wrapper, but instead had it packed in a pocket or their bag and it fell out.
Let's all do our part and gently remind others that this community needs everyone to pitch in to keep the course clean.
Cheers, Steve

Thanks for your reply Marty, I really apprieate it. Also, I guess I just caught some part of a conversation that was miss communicated along the way on the 4th. Therefore I am a bit more at ease now. Well mis communication right and left, up n down. Just last night 7/6/06 when I was dging with a friend I saw Jon Baldwin and he told me its just a experiment for now to not have garbage cans/recycling cans on alot of the holes on the course.
As for the City paying to have garbage cans emptied in parks, you think they do it alone? nah, our tax dollars go towards that.
don't let the trees be in your way too much when on the course at delay, like I allow them to happen in most cases.

After playing a round and finding several holes with bottles left on the benches by people who obviously think they are entitled to have someone else pack out their trash, I tend to agree with the point that Marty made during the round. Namely, two or three cans here and there is better than the forty that sit around the trash can when it becomes too full to pile any more on top. Someone has to pick those up. I think people will be initially pissed off because of the missing trash cans, but they will get used to the idea and will actually start taking responsibility for their own waste. Be patient with this idea and I think it will pay off for everyone.
As for the litter... whomever is doing it please realize that you are not making a point against the people who took out the trash cans. You are making the point that you are lazy and you really don't care about De La enough to carry out a 1 oz bottle that pales in comparison to the weight of your numerous discs. Perhaps we could make a large art project with all the trash that is collected and display it close the parking lot. Maybe Mark could make some money by selling portable trash recepticles that cover up the fact that you are consuming alcohol so as to avoid confrontations with the Ranger.

Hello All,
So the experiment to remove several trash and recycling bins on the course has been in place for several months now, and I was wondering how people felt (at least the ones that use this forum)!
I have been very pleased with the overall result. Fewer trash cans, which to me are eyesores, and no large increase in litter on the grounds. I have been picking up a little bit more here and there, and carrying it a bit further, but it's a nominal effort (and quick when you're jogging!).
I'd love to hear from other people. In my opinion, the experiment was a success.
Cheers, Steve
