visiting Santa Cruz next week - 2006/12/08 15:17
Hi all,
Sorry to post this in the "Course Maintenance" forum, but there didn't seem to be any "general" topics... I'll be visiting Santa Cruz next week for the first time since I felt like I was enough of a disc golfer to take on DeLa. So I'm wondering, will it be easy enough for a newbie to find his way around the course? (If not, is it likely that I'll find people up there to show me around on a weekday morning in December?)
This may be a little more on-topic: is Will Dower's map, posted in September, the best one to use? (By the way, I was experimenting with putting his map into Google Earth, if anyone's interested.)
And now I'm afraid I'm getting seriously off-topic again, but what's the status of Black Mouse? Is it still there? Playable? (I'm also hoping to get down to CSUMB, but those courses seem pretty straightforward so I don't need to waste anyone's time with questions about 'em.)
Thanks for any info!

Hi Adam, The work that Will did was a great start, but I think that the GPS data is still a little rough. I think that more data might be collected in the coming months to upgrade the mapping system.
You might have better luck clicking on the "course info" category to the left and following the link to the course maps. I like the color one because it shows the relief...
Dela is occupied at pretty much any time during daylight hours these days. The number of people up there has been steadily growing over the last few years. It gets pretty crowded in the afternoon, so a morning round at Dela and afternoon at CSUMB might be the best use of your time. Even in the morning, you'll probably find someone at Dela to follow around.
Black mouse was still viable the last I heard. However, there may be restrictions on day time use during school hours. A part of the course is on school property... Ask around when you get to Dela for more info on Black Mouse.
Hope you enjoy your visit to SC.

The reason I asked was that it looks like Will's new map is slightly different that the fancy PDF one. Will's hole #9 is marked with a question mark on the color map, and the color map's #19 is missing from Will's map. So all the numbers from #9 to #19 are different on the two maps. Which is the current layout? Are there signs?
It gets pretty crowded in the afternoon, so a morning round at Dela and afternoon at CSUMB might be the best use of your time. 63 holes in one day? That sounds like a recipe for a sore arm.
I was thinking I'd maybe do CSUMB on Monday and DeLa on Wednesday or Thursday morning.

If you planning on playing around 8:30 AM on Wednesday or Thursday let me know and I might be able to make a point to be up there. Then a map won't be necessary.

Hi Adam, Will's GPS journey went in sequence. The (?) labeled hole is actually known as "8A" (between 8 and 9).
Although the actual tee and hole points on Will's GPS work may be more accurate than the existing maps, the color or black and white map would both work. The hard part is that about half of the holes at Dela have "blind tees", where the pin is not visible from the tee box.
All holes have tee signs, although a couple have been vandalized and lack a map. Look for the washer on the poles for the tee signs, which will indicate the pin position when there are multiple pin spots.
Of course, the best way to learn the course is to play with a local pro... Stan is an expert! It would be worth rising early (the best time of the day anyway!!).
Enjoy!
