Re:SF Safari - 8/20-21/2005 - 2005/08/16 18:29
Hey Guys,

I traded voicemails with Rob Byers this afteroon. He confirmed that it will be OK for DDGC to put up a tent and generallly promote the club at the Safari. He also mentioned that since this is a big fund raiser for the SF club, he would like to limit concessions to SFDGC.

So, we'll see everyone under the tent on Saturday AM. Players meeting is at 8:30 AM.

I'll bring both tents and a few chairs. Sounds like I may be able to play in the open division. I've always enjoyed the relaxed nature of the DFL group. I'll lhave some coolers too. Anyone have a portable grill?

I've got a wedding to attend, so I won't make the tourney, but I've got a nice Weber Q grill to lend if yer interested.

Russ,

You'll want to get there REAL early to get a parking spot next to tournament central. Which will be desirable given the tent gear.

I'm not sure grilling is necessarily a good thing. We'll only have so much time between rounds. Maybe something like a few big subs (from Safeway or Costco etc) could be sliced up into fist sized portions, wrapped in baggies and stored in the cooler. It would be less 'work intensive' during the day of the event.

Don't get me wrong though...if you want to grill, be my guest. It would be nice to have burgers and dogs. I'm not sure how Rob would feel about that though since the subject of concessions was brought up. I suppose it would be okay as long as we weren't selling them to other players.

Rob is going to check in with Noah's and I'll be picking up the day olds on Friday evening (assuming they have some for us). Bring your own schmear!

D

I will be there very early on Sat., hopefully. I like the sandwich idea. I'll look for a Safeway or Togo's close to the park. I'm pretty sure I'm not playing Sat. morning so I can take care of it.

hey all...

there are a 'couple' of restaurants within walking distance; at leat one is Vietnamese and quite good, and there are other establishments. Past Safari's the tournament organizers have you 'sign' up for burritos which are delivered to the site for lunch. I usually bring a cooler with Bread; P&J; cookies and chips...

BTW: i don't think 'grilling' for personal purpose would be frowned upon by the Tourney organizers...it is work though....

fyi:
if you have not played the Safari before, a few things to keep in mind:

  • It can be downright, freakn' COLD if the fog is in. Dress in layers....

  • If you think the hornets at DeLa are bad...watch out where you walk, and where your disc lands, in Golden Gate Park...BE AWARE...

  • Homeless folks are common and you may find that your throws will land in someones 'park side bush condo'...be polite and respectful...

  • Bring a 'stool' to carry as there are 'no places' to sit.

  • The terrain is 'very sandy' and the 'temporary tees' are usually wasted by the end of the first round...you may want to bring 'extra socks' to change between rounds, and i strongly recommend [if you have them] wearing 'gators' or gortex rain sox to keep the sand out of your shoes....
