City grading and seeding - 2005/12/10 09:43
The City completed the grading and seeding on Hole 13 on Thursday.
THIS AREA IS STILL CLOSED THROUGH MID-APRIL.
Now, we can watch the grass grow.
I was at the course on Tuesday morning when they broke up the hard packed surface before the mulch was applied. The conditions seemed ideal in the base for growth of grass. With the mulch to provide nutrition and the waddles around the area to limit run off, I am confident that this project will be a success.
Please, keep out of the restoration area.
Many thanks to the City of Santa Cruz for their hard work and their continuing commitment to disc golf at DeLaveaga Park.

We all should be appreciative to the City for their involvement in the restoration of the course. All indications so far have shown their good faith in becoming partners with us. This is our chance to step up as a group and take charge of the direction of our beloved DeLa.
The City doesn't want to run the course. They want us to demonstrate that we have the ability to do so ourselves. Public departments work well when they are under decisive direction. We have the opportunity now to be that driving force as a club.
SOOOO..........I advise that you, fellow DDGC member, get involved. Come to a DDGC meeting and bring your own vision as we agree on a Master Plan for the course. Lead by example. Be a steward. Leave the course better than you found it. All activity now at the course reflects on the club. Together, we can show everyone that we are the best possible candidates for deciding the future of our home course.

Hi Katie, Yes, we do have news.
Marty and I met with Parks and Rec and the City's biologist last Friday.
We obtained authorization to open these holes for at least one round this weekend and also during the pro event in a couple of weeks. The area will remain closed for recreational use between events and for a while longer.
An IMPORTANT aspect of play both weekends, and as we move forward, is that there will be a TRAIL through the area. The trail will be clearly marked with yellow caution tape. During Masters Cup play, players will be required to stay on the trail until they are near their disc, only venture over to their disc for the throw, and then return directly to the trail. This will limit use of the restoration area.
Also during tournament play, a player will be first warned, and then receive a STROKE penalty for not following the trail rule. Only the player whose disc is off trail will be able to go to his or her disc. Caddies, spectators, etc. must stay on the trail.
We will have a spotter at that location during all tournament play.
Because all the grass at the course, including the restoration area, got a slow start with the rains, the grass in the restored meadow is still young and vulnerable. We don't know when it will be reopened for casual play, if at all this summer. More information on that to come.
Let me know if there are questions.

Hi Ed,
Will the groups be in charge of making the call or is the spotter going to be the person to issue warnings? It's up to the TD to make the "official" rule. I imagine players will be very reluctant to call a foul on someone in their group for this kind of thing... Most of the out-of-towners will think it is silly, not having the background on the issue.
While I am generally not in favor of having course "police", in this case, it may be the most equitable solution, and avoid inter-player conflict.
Just some thoughts... Cheers, Steve
