What to play? - 2005/01/06 17:07
Hey All,
I am coming to play NorCal in Feb or March with three friends from Colorado and want to know where to play. Am looking for suggestions of the best and most challenging courses in the area. We will be there for 4 days.
I have played Stafford Lake (Awesome!), Napa (cool), and Aquatic Park (ok). I hope to play Stafford Lake again, and we will definitely hit DeLaveaga, and I'm relying on your suggestions for the rest.
Thanks so much! ...and if anyone comes to Colorado in the future, feel free to contact me for information or for someone to throw with.

hello, I suggest playing the following nor cal courses if you have
a chance:
Auburn
Grass Valley
Penn Valley
Truckee
Tahoe
Orangevale
Zaypher Cove

All the above are good courses.

You've already got a good list. I'd add Rocklin--it's totally re-done, long cement tees, great pin placement, and a mix of shots. You can do the greater Sacramento area tour and hit Auburn, Rocklin, and Orangevale in one (busy) day. Penn and Grass Valleys are also good, but a bit more out of the way. Truckee, Bijou, and Zephyr Cove (all in tahoe) will have deep snow until well after you are gone.

Vacaville is ok, tough when it's windy, but otherwise a quick play (no crowds).

Have fun!
Steve

The best most challenging after Dela & Novato would be
Penn Valley & Grass Valley. They are 5 minutes away from each other, and both excellent courses.

Tahoe will probably still be coverd in snow, too bad as they are very nice courses.

Auburn is OK, but is in a pedestrian park, so it can be a little hectic, avoid weekends. The Tacos around the corner are pretty good

I hear Rocklin is good, and new, less crowded .... I've never been.

Napa is verry hilly, and the park is pretty uptight about coming and going. You could easily bounce of a baskett and roll 200+ feet away.

Ornagevale is a classic flater course, and home to St Patys.

A good course, with a clubhouse, discshop and so on. It's in the middle of Sacramento.

You know about bezerkely.

Persoanlly I really like Grass Valley, with all respect it's like a slightly smaller version of Dela. Very challenging course in the pines and manzanita with elevation changes, and aqueducts running through. It's very pretty and home to the coolest golfers on the west coast. It has elevation shifts and some long holes. It gets busy, so there's always Penn Valley just down the road, also a great course in a huge park.

I'll just add that if you're going to play DeLa you might as well also play the course in Monterey. Also, Rocklin is good if you're playing alone because it's usually not crowded and hard to lose your disc there.

I would beg to differ.

Monterey is OK but starts pulling you pretty far way from the rest of NorCal. Monterey is also flat, cool, and windy. Plus it's on college campus, so the atmosphere is not exactly laid back and there are parking / cop issues etc. Quite a differet course than any of the others mentioned excpet possibly Berkely...

IMHO it is not on par with dela, GV, PV, Novato.
