New Monthly Payout Scenario - 2006/03/21 08:57
I thought I'd post this here before making it a "News Item" to get everyone's input.

It was decided at the last DDGC meeting that no more than $100 will be donated toward the DDGC for any monthly tournament. What does this mean to you?

Well...let's say 40 players show up to play. Normally, $5 from each player would be donated to the club which would total $200. (40x5=200) NOW...only $100 would go toward the club and the remaining $100 would be added to the overall pot.

For instance, if all of those players put in $10, we'd have a total of $400.00. This would leave $300.00 for payouts rather than $200.00 as it has been in the past.

The additional money will be divided up equally among divisions after it has been determined how many players in that division paid in. This will work much like the old system on the "first pass". $5 per player 'paid in' per division. Just to clear this up, I will present you with the following scenario:

April Monthly "Fools for a Day"

40 players - 12 PRO ($120), 8 AM Master ($60 and $10), 10 AM1 ($100) and 10 AM2 ($80 and $10). In Am Master and AM2 not all players elected to play for cash. Total - $380.00

$380.00 - $100.00 = $280.00

Total payouts per division (first pass): Pro - 12x5=60. AM Master - 6x5=30. AM1 - 10x5=50. AM2 - 8x5=40 Total = $180

Total of $280.00 to pay out. $280-180 (total by division) =$100 additional to pay out ($25 per division)

So the purses per division are now: Pro - $85.00 AM Master $55 AM1 $75 and AM2 $65

It seems complex, but believe me it's easier than trying to figure out percentages. It's just more difficult to explain than actually DO.

By doing it this way, we can still allow players to pay a minimal $5 entry fee if they choose.

This is how it's laying out right now in my mind, but I'm open to other suggestions (like putting a percentage or a fixed amount of the total additional payout into an ace pool).

Let me know your thoughts.

Hey Dave,

I like it. My only suggestion is that you MUST have 4 players (or maybe 3?) in a division. If only 2 Sr. Grandmasters showed up, one would get a disproportionately large chunk of the "extra" , divided cash. As the disparity between the number of players in each division grows, so does the allocation of "extra" funds.

But this could be a good thing. If AM1 players complain they have 10 guys splitting the extra vs. 4 pros splitting the same cut, then some might just bump themselves up...!

And thanks for providing the example. It helps!

Cheers,
Steve

I like it too. I'd like to think that more women might show up and put money in. It should be more inviting!

Hello

Adding cash from the club is a great plan and may help some non-members see benefits from club membership. This is a cool idea and a great opportunity for the club to give back.

In terms of Steve's point about the two person division, I think we have always made it "three people to make a division". That should take care of the issue. A good point, though, Steve.

Keep it flat and down the middle.

Well...that's why we need to discuss it and why I need your input. It's your tournament.

So let's say we have $200 in extra cash and five divisions. $40 extra to each division. 10 pros paid in and 3 sr grands.

That makes the pro pot $90 and the sr grand pot $55

Hmmm...that is quite the disparity I think. If we do this right, we're going to HAVE to think percentages. Either that or specifify a certain percentage per pool before we start. (but that would just piss people off...)

Shouldn't be too difficult though. Total number of players "paid in" - percentage by division. If 25% are playing pro, then 25% of added cash goes to the pro pool.

HOWEVER - it COULD be argued that AMs shouldn't be playing for the added cash AT ALL. They could play for the total pot within their pools. Then maybe we get something like this:

Total of $400 brought in - $300.00 added cash

$30 - $40 allotted for trophies
$100 allotted for AM prizes
$50 to an ace pool
And all the rest to the Pro division ($110.00)

That would be easy and we wouldn't have to deal with working out percentages. It might also be MORE incentive for people to play the pro division.

Thoughts?
