Sticks in Sleeves (ruined holes) - 2006/04/17 10:31
On Saturday I went out into the back holes to check on some trees I planted last winter.
I was very dissapointed to find that some (*&%$@#!@) had put broken tree branches into the vancant sleeves of holes 13, 14 & 15 presumeably so they could play object golf on holes they should not be on in the first place.
Here is what happens when they do that. The sleeves, filled with water rots the branch then the wood breaks off into the sleeve, so that the basket can not be put back in, thereby ruining the hole for everyone. This is exaclty what has happened recently on Hole 17.
Had some selfish person(s) not put a stick in that sleeve and ruined it, there would be a basket there now.
If you are doing this or know someone who is doing this, please ask them to stop.

That sucks ass! Let's find that person(s) and give them a good talking to, make them promise never ever to do it again, make them suck the wood out, buy us some beer, buy John an extra beer for his trouble, forgive them, put the basket in and play it!

Kevin and I were able to 'unplug' the sleeve on 17 by using a long drill bit and slamming the basket down into the sleeve.
When we tried to fit the basket after some drilling, we noticed that some mud had been picked up on the inside of the basket pipe when we pulled it out. So we figured we could slam it in there a few times and use the basket pipe itself as a tool. Sort of like a 'pole hole digger' without the ability to "pinch".
After a couple of tries, we hit pay dirt (er...um..."stick") and pulled the problem out.
The drill bit wasn't too effective at getting the material out, but it did help loosen it up.

Oh yeah...we also have a solution to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future. It's not implemented yet, but it will happen.
(and NO, the solution is not to torture and maim the perpetrators... )

At Hellyer we use PVC Pipe plugs to seal the sleeves that aren't in use. They cost about 30 cents each and in the inital 6 month pilot run they seam to be working and not disappearing like I thought they might. Another added benfit is that they are white and easy to see when your mowing.
Its a tight fit on some but you can screw/force them in over and over again and they stay put. We talked about permantently attaching them somehow but it doesn't seam like we need to go the extra step.
