taking away garbage cans-- - 2006/07/04 21:22
and recycling from the holes? well great thought, but it will
back fire(like i told davie this am.)
Anyhow its like I ask all the wannta bee cops I see out on the roads on
the 4th, what is 2 + 2 ?
should be easy one right? well not really.
Its more complexed than meets the eye.
I guess though we shall let it be and see how well it does, though I believe
it shall backfire.
What I believe should happen is to have several 'stewards' of the delay course that will each week volunteer there own time and empty the garbage cans
on the course.
Guess I will have to attend the next club meeting?(When?) and bring it
up to people at the meeting.

anyway I think its a very very bad idea to take away the
garbage cans/recycling cans from the course.

during the last club meeting, discussion included the fact that our longtime recycler and waste steward, Annie, would no longer be performing such duties .

your basic idea of having stewards to deal with the trash was discussed amongst other things, including voting on having limited trash can exposure, along with having a campaign to educate people to 'pack their trash'.
as best as i can remember, it was decided to have trash cans on holes 1, 7, 11 and ???

the reason for limited 'trash cans', is that people will overflow the trash cans, leaving their trash on the ground next to the can for someone else to pick up, and it is not always evident, that 'someone' will empty the trash cans in a timely manner. having limited trash cans is a tried and tested procedure that goes back many years when we did not have a dumpster and had to haul the trash to the dump ourselves.

witness the trash can on hole #8, right now, the trash is overflowing onto the ground . my guess is that the can will be removed shortly....

also, if you notice, since the cans were removed on holes #1, #5, #27 and #10 [which should never have a trash can], there is no trash on the ground [at least not since monday past].

for the most part, most people will hold their trash until there is a proper receptacle. that being the case, most people can wait until they return to the parking lot and use the dumpster, etc. clueless people who throw their trash on the ground are likely to do it, with, or, without a trash can.

kudos to Kevin Crews, Dave Thomas, Courtland Peterson and others for taking extra time during last Saturday's monthly to carry trash bags and police the course while we played.

along with other trash, hundreds of cigarette butts were picked up, especially around the tee boxes.

it amazed me to find so many 'new butts' on the ground when i played on Monday, just two days later..

Please, everyone who smokes needs to stop leaving their cigarette butts on the course....you also need to be careful to not start a fire; any carelessness in this matter would most likely close the course...might piss off alot of people. .

I myself am on a 'butt eradication' program, and ecourage others to join me in my campaign to stomp out butts on the course. it is a simple project that only involves taking the time to 'pick up butts', and asking anybody you see leaving butts on the course, to not do so....if many of you join me, then i predict in no time, the course will be without those ugly little paper wrapped cotton filters, allowing for a more pleasant discgolf experience...

Well since I was not at the last or last several club meetings(probably
have not attended one since like the beg of the year), I was not
aware of this discussion nor for some reason were others? and the meeting
minutes have not been posted like they use to be?
and the basic idea, of course 'stewards' is not basic.
Also as for your statement about not having trash cans or recycling cans on
any of the holes and not seeing any garbage around(well tues morn 4th of July,
on hole 1 I took several garbage items away from the benches and the
surrounding areas)

I think all in all, if the club wants to make the mistake of taking away trash
cans/recycling cans from holes, then thats the clubs mistake.

I do thank you Marty for telling me that it was previously discussed and for some unimparent reason decided that the trash cans/recycling can should
be taken away. Just was no discussion/communication about it via the
club website.

Also Marty, I commend you for the clean up the butts, I think I will do my part with that also when I see butts on the ground left.

Well I still will never agree with any of the members about not having garbage cans/recycling cans on the course, but thats what was decided
so somehow I will go along with it..

Re: taking away garbage cans-- - 2006/07/05 23:01
Many years ago in a land far away...

...the course was not as busy as it is today. We would find trash here and there on the course and after getting tired of picking it up all the time...decided it might be prudent to have a trash can or two available on the course proper for those able bodied souls who brought liquid entertainment and munchables along with them for their round.

Now as more people playing the course and more trash cans were added to various dedicating stopping points throughout the course in order to accomodate the heavier traffic.

As time went by, we contracted Annie to take care of the recycling and trash.

But now that she no longer wants the responsibility (and I don't blame her one bit), the DDGC is responsible for bringing all of that trash and recycling to the dumpster area. We have a fair number of Club members, but not too many volunteers for a task like this one.

So that's one reason to remove the garbage cans.

Here's another:

We have been picking up as much trash on the course with garbage cans on the course as we picked up BEFORE we had them there.. As long as we continue to provide convenient locations to dump their trash, they will bring MORE of it onto the course. To professional psychiatrists and counsellors, this is known as enabling.

Just yesterday, I came up on a guy who was bringing a six pack with him. I told him about the trash can situation and he took the six back to his car and only brought two with him. (I would remind you all at this point that I am NOT a Ranger and have no right to prevent him from doing so....)

This is a matter of retraining the players. And maybe some signage. As time goes by, people will get used to the new paradigm and make the proper adjustments.

Want another? Here's one...The course looks much nicer without those ugly garbage cans all over the place. Just look around at those tees where the cans used to be and tell me it doesn't look better...cleaner... When you drive down through the course on the way to the parking lot, you don't see all that crap anymore. It looks like a place that deserves your respect.

If I have to pick up a few bottles and cans every now and then...that's okay. I've been doing that ANYWAY - even WITH trash cans on the course.

So there you have it.

Re: taking away garbage cans-- - 2006/07/06 02:04
clap clap, but yet...boo.
Hmm, parks without trash cans?, just imagine lower delay without
trash cans or nisene and marks with no trash cans? or wilder state park
with no trash cans?
schools with no trash cans or bathrooms with no trash cans or houses with
no trash cans? all for the sake of 'the ugly trash can' being gone.
not a pretty sight my friend.

what a wild theory, no trash can, then they shall bring less with them.

I could go on and on and show you how mistaken you are, but I think we can
just agree not to agree.

Last note, I will attend the july monthly meeting and let the club members in attendance know how disappointed in them I really am.

Dolan,

Your points seem logical, but give this a chance. If you've played at the Monterey courses, you'll see very little trash on the ground, and very few trash cans available.

If you look at Nissen Marks and Wilder Ranch, etc, you'll see very little trash on the ground, NO trash cans on trails (similar to our fairways), but trash cans back at the main park area. "Pack your trash" is a common saying and common practice.

It will work if people work at it and consider the environment.

Going to a club meeting is a great idea - I wish I would attend more, myself (a reminder on the club web site would be handy). I think you'll find more club officers and very few club members there.
