I am looking forward to the tournament--should be lots of fun! There will be two courses: the original course that plays in and around a couple of buildings near the new dorms, and a new course that may/may not have permanent pole holes in by game time. I heard from a CSUMB local that permanent bases are going into the gournd this weekend, and the DGA has been very generous with baskets. This new layout is supposed to be very similar to the temporary course used during the 2004 NorCal championships (which is mostly in "wilderness" across the street from the original course).
I'm not the person to help with skills, but I've played this tournament the last 2 yr and have really enjoyed it.
Cheers, Steve

i don't know that Ican get a round in with you,or that I could necessarilly help in that way, but I can give you some tips on things I have learned over the years playing CSUMB and others.
1. Monterey is often breezy to windy. You do not want to putt there or try tricky long stuff. If your 1 shot is not parked, lay up. And not juts any lay up, you should have extra focus on getting really really close tothe basket at monterey on every shot, because you don't want to put when it's windy.
To that end use more stable or newer putters. DOn't float your disc. If you wind up with a mid to long up shot with wind conditionsand yournot sure wether to go left or right, backhand or forehand a good rule of thumb is "to never show the bottom face of the disc to the wind" or it can really take off and sail.
SO if your right handed 100 feet form the basket, and the wind is blowing hard left to right, you should throw backhand so the top of the disc faces the wind. If the wind is blowing right to left then you might want to throw forehand.(i hope I expalined this OK?)
* Get some hand warmers at Outdoor world or Big 5. You can throw alot better in the AM if you can actually feel your fingers : )
2. Monterey has undeveloped tee pads. Even if they put fly matts down, they will be uneven as the sand moves underneath. This causes your shoulders and elbow to go off line when you drive, causing you to miss fairways. One thing that can help a lot is to throw with only one step like a base ball pitcher from the tee.it's a alot easier for 2-fingers throwers, but I see a few people flat foot backhanders pretty far. You may give up distance, but it can keep you out of trouble.
2a. Trees can be very sticky at Monterey, Avoidthem and your save discs and strokes ; )
3. Because you will be playing and walking in sandy ground, your feet are going to hurt at the end of the day I absolutely gurantee that at Monterey.
If you can add some of those cushion inserts to your shoes, try it. You'llhave a better experience taking your shoes off too. Do it a day ahead and get used to them. Bring extra socks. Take aspirin Before you play. It's nice to have some epson salts to saok your feet when you get home. Try to take your shoes off at lunch, and change sox.
Sometimes the Black Box (Cafe) is open, some times not. I hear it'sup inthe ari so far. That means your food options could be litmited to BK down the road. Probably not the best for your game. There is another deli place but it can be tricky to find.
I would pack some trail mix, sandwiches, stuff you know you like and will sound appealingat the break. Golf is a very mental game. You can't play your best if you're hungry or tired. Bring a folding chair, there's not a lot of seating there.
Stop in Moss Landing at Phils for a cup of some great clam chowder on your way home. You can'tmiss it, its' prettymuch the only thing out there over the 1 lane bridge. It's Redish Orange.
Have Fun.It's the most important thing. And enjoy the company of playing a little organized golf with your friends who share your passion. The more you can relax and have fun, the better your game tends to go. And vice-versa.
Say hello to Merle and thank him for running the event. He is a great guy who does a lot for the sport. And try to thank DGA, the main sponsors who are always there for us.
I don'tk now if I can make it myself yet as I going out of town? So have some fun and some chowder for me if I don't make it.
Good Luck!

I've played this tourny twice, plus the Nor Cal championships last year. The permanent course is a lot of fun, but then new one is really challenging, especially when the wind picks up.
Moriarti's write up is right on. I wish I had half that information the first time I played there. I was going to try and make it up on Sunday to practice, but I have to go out of town around noon. I'm sure there will be a few people that go up on Sunday to check everything out, so you'll probably be able to hook up with someone there.
