San Francisco’s First Disc Golf Course Unveiled in Golden Gate Park
High Flying Sport Lands in Crown Jewel of San Francisco Parks System

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 26, 2007 – The San Francisco Disc Golf Club, in conjunction with the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department, today announced the grand opening of San Francisco’s first Disc golf course. Located in Golden Gate Park across from Speedway Meadow, the course is a world class, 18-hole facility, and will be free to the public.

The grand opening will take place on Saturday, March 31st, 2007 starting at 10:00am. Following short presentations by the General Manager of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, Yomi Agunbiade, and Recreation and Park Commissioner Meagan Levitan and Club members, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony. There will also be various other Frisbee sports and games throughout the day, including a freestyle demonstration by world-class competitors from around the Bay Area.

Disc golf was invented in California in the 1970s, and has quickly grown in popularity. The rules of disc golf are similar to regular golf, except instead of hitting a ball into a hole, players throw Frisbee-like plastic discs into an elevated metal basket. “Disc golf attracts a wide variety of players because of the low barrier to entry and the low ongoing costs,” said club founder, Greg Quiroga. “Unlike ‘ball golf’ there are no greens fees, tee times, or expensive sets of clubs to buy,” Quiroga continued, “Discs cost just $10 each, and a beginner can have a great time with just one.”

San Francisco now joins the 1,200 other cities that provide access to this new, fun sport. The Golden Gate Park course is the direct result of a decade-long effort by the San Francisco Disc Golf Club, who initially proposed the idea to the Department in 1997. Using donations from the public to pay for the equipment, the Club’s volunteers built the course over the past five months and are now donating it to the City of San Francisco for all its residents to enjoy. “It is our pleasure to donate this facility to the City. Disc golf has landed in Golden Gate Park and is here to stay,” said Ross Hammond, the Club’s Outreach Director.

“San Franciscans need access to a wide variety of recreational activities. Disc golf is a new, affordable recreation that we are excited to be able to offer in our city’s most popular park,” said Meagan Levitan, San Francisco Recreation and Parks Commissioner. “We are thrilled to accept this donation from an organization that is committed to providing low-cost recreation for our city’s residents.”

The course opens on Saturday, March 31, 2007. Play is free, and anyone is welcome to enjoy it.
