Thoughts for 2x events - 2007/06/28 11:46
1. I've wanted to do a "vintage Frisbee golf" tournament for awhile. This would require use of pre-beveled edge discs. Old model or new model frisbees could be used (such as an old Wham-O or a new UltraStar), as long as they are PDGA approved (most frisbees actually are). We would probably move all pins to the short positions for this. How can I/we get this going? Would the club donate resources/prizes for this? I really think this could be a big hit, and a lot of fun!
2. Disc Swap Meet - Kinda speaks for itself. Everyone brings their discs they are trying to get rid of, and trades/sales are made. Basically just need a big meeting room for this, perhaps the club could provide organization and refreshments?
I'd like to get a serious discussion going, especially about the vintage Frisbee event. Should I be talking to club officers offline? Perhaps we could do this in late July or early August (before the SF Safari)? Thoughts?

I like both ideas. Maybe have the swap meet first so people might be able to obtain some old school plastic. We can discuss it at the next club meeting, Tuesday July 10th at 7:00 at the Sweet Spot.

Right Russ, both ideas do sound good. Yes it would make sense to have the 'Swap Meet' first.

I just checked out Discovering the World.
They have some Softie 86's, Puppies, and, one of my old favorites, the Wham-O HDX model, that are new, but not "vintage".
What molds will qualify as "vintage" discs? I see the 86 and the Puppy, even ultra-star and and the sky-styler, on the PDGA approved list, but not the HDX (which I recall as an old model). The PDGA list doesn't have the date of approval...
It would be cool to get a list going of approved discs for this event so we can check out some of that old style plastic again.

Well, how it would work is that we pick a date, and all discs PDGA approved before that date are OK to use.
The PDGA site has this info readily available, I just printed it out. I'm thinking around 1981 to be the latest date of approval for the tourney. This makes sense, because if we go any later (1982-1984) then the Eagle/Aero/Aviar is OK. Then everyone will use an Aviar(I would!), which is kinda not the aim of this. If you look at the list, 1981 is an obvious date to pick.
So, if we go with 1981, you can use:
Wham-O
All Midnight Flyers All Night Flyers 70/71 molds (97g) 40/401F/41G/42 molds (119g) All Fastbacks Professional (all models) Super Pro Olympic/Collegiate 50 mold (141g) 80 mold (165g) - specifically includes HDX models! Master
Dynamic Discs
Puppy Super Puppy
Discraft
Sky Pro Skystar Sky-Styler Ultra-Star (the Ultimate players will love that!)
You can get many these models online for around $10. Ultra-Stars are especially easy to obtain for obvious reasons. Also, I can look into finding a vendor that has quantity sales of some different models if the club will contribute $$$ for this. We can talk more at the meeting.
