APRIL MONTHLY - 2005/03/23 09:30
In an effort to increase participation in the monthly AND the club in general, we thought it might be a good idea to take a hard look at the monthly and see if there is a way we can integrate club membership involvement with the tournament.

In the past, the monthly had always been two rounds. However, due to increased use at the course in recent years, it makes it difficult to standardize a two-round format. With this in mind, we thought we might be able to add some other activities. It is possible we may move to include a second round in the near future along with these additional activities, but we want to try this format for a few months and see if it will have a positive effect on participation.

All that being said, here's the deal:

1. One round of 27 holes - $5 RANDOM DRAW. Even though we all like to play with our friends - even at the monthly - part of the purpose of the event is to meet and play with people you don't know. And then...well...you'll know them! In addition, inexperienced players will have an opportunity to play with experienced players and hopefully be able to refine their skills and course etiquette.

2. Ace pool - a running Ace Pool will start with the April Monthly. If nobody gets an ace, it will turn over into the next month. It's $1 to get in. If you participate in the round of 27 and the putting contest, you'll automatically be entered into the ace pool (that means you'll save $1).

3. Putting Contest - $5 The putting contest happens immediately after the round of 27. It will be a fixed payout - no divisions. (We may look into offering a stack of plastic for an am division and cash payout for a pro division - let me hear your opinions on that ASAP)

4. There will be a skill clinic in the early afternoon (approx 2PM) with our course pro Matt Voorhees. This is open to the general public. Free with participation in the monthly and/or putting contest - otherwise a small donation is requested.

5. The membership committee will have a table set up for accepting memberships. If you are unaware of what you get with your membership, please check Ed Buskirk's post in the Membership area of this forum.

6. Mark has agreed to sell hot dogs during the breaks as a fund raiser.

If anyone has any ideas or comments, from how the putting contest should be run to what sort of condiments we should provide for hot dogs...please let us know!

Your friendly neighborhood events committee

Hi Dave et al.,

Here are my comments:

1. While it would be fun to play 2 rounds, you pointed out that it gets crowded with the general public, and it's also a lot of time to devote to a non-sanctioned, low-stakes tournament. But if attendance grew, that might make it more of a draw.

2. I really like the idea of a random draw--and I would like to think that it is random not within a division, but across divisions. I enjoy watching the pros and commiserating with the beginners.

3. Ace pool is cool. I know other courses where it can get up to several hundred dollars.

4. I'd like more details about the putting contest. Is it 5 shots from 5 stations, each with a different point value, and highest score wins? Or shoot from each of the stones now placed around the putting pin--most in wins? Or...?

5. I am curious about the clinic. Is there enough space to do something other than putting or short up shots? Almost sounds like this is an activity for the fields on lower DeLa park with cones or M-14s to shoot at...

Thanks Dave!
Steve

Hi Steve,

1. While it would be fun to play 2 rounds, you pointed out that it gets crowded with the general public, and it's also a lot of time to devote to a non-sanctioned, low-stakes tournament. But if attendance grew, that might make it more of a draw.

I completely agree and I'd like to see the old two round format return. But I think we need to give such a transition some time. "One round or two" is something we'd like to get club member opinions on. If the concensus is two rounds, I'm all for it.

2. I really like the idea of a random draw--and I would like to think that it is random not within a division, but across divisions. I enjoy watching the pros and commiserating with the beginners.

It would be random across divisions. When I first started playing Norcal tournaments, they were all run this way and as a result, I had opportunities as an AM to play with guys like Oates and Lissaman among many others. It was a great experience and can be a great learning experience for everyone.

3. Ace pool is cool. I know other courses where it can get up to several hundred dollars.

You betcha.

4. I'd like more details about the putting contest. Is it 5 shots from 5 stations, each with a different point value, and highest score wins? Or shoot from each of the stones now placed around the putting pin--most in wins? Or...?

I've been thinking about this a lot and I'm a big fan of Belchik's version of Ed Headrick's 'Around 9' game. Here's how I think it will play out:

3 putts from each station around the basket. They are numbered 1 through 10 from shortest to longest. The shooter gets one point for each shot made and these are multiplied by the number of the station. You get three extra points for making the first putt. If you miss the last putt, you must make the longest "comebacker" putt or the number of points from that station will be subtracted from your score and you forfiet the points you've already gotten from that station.

Example: From station five (22 ft), you make the first putt and miss the other two. 1 x 5 = 5 + 3 (for making the first putt) gets you 8 points. But you still have to make the "return/comeback" putt to claim your points. Let's say the missed second putt settles down 5 feet from the basket and the missed third putt rolls 30 feet away. That means you'd have to make the 30 footer to keep your 8 points and avoid having 5 points subtracted from your score.

It's easier than it sounds.

5. I am curious about the clinic. Is there enough space to do something other than putting or short up shots? Almost sounds like this is an activity for the fields on lower DeLa park with cones or M-14s to shoot at...

I think they should be done at the course for the sake of DDGC visibility. We want players to see the benefits of becoming a member. I think a driving clinic would be best held at hole #1 since it would be an easy matter to re-direct players to start on hole #2 (or #7) for the duration of the clinic. Hole #6 tee would also be a great location.

Basic instruction could be done in the practice putting area as well.

This is all pretty new to all of us, so we're probably going to have to allow for some flexibility along those lines.

Thanks!

We missed you Stan!

KUDOS to Dave Thomas!!

The monthly went well. 35 players in all. We will have to post the results soon. not much on the putting contest this month, we will have to promote that differently for future or revise.

A lot of people signed up for Membership and got the new "Member 2005" t-shirts. The long sleeve is Grey with Blue printing, the short sleeve is light blue with dark blue printing. Bag Tags are on the way!!

Great job Dave, Ed, and everyone for showing up and helping out!
