Re:Aptos High course - 2008/04/23 12:16
I had a lot of fun playing this course yesterday. It's a great place to practice midrange and up shots.

I might be a little biased because this course is more about accuracy and less about distance, which fits my game better. This is the perfect place for me to go on those days where I don't have the time to play at Dela. It's closer to my house, fits my abilities well and it plays fast.

I shot -10 yesterday. 11 birdies and 1 bogey (an example of how a misplaced drive and bad upshot can get you a bogey here). The only hole that isn't really reachable by most people is 16, but it's a pretty easy par. I'm definitely expecting to hear about some 15 and 16 downs at some point.

The course is laid out pretty well for the most part. My only suggestions are to find a better place for hole 3 because of the danger of going over the fence onto the field, hitting someone on the stairs, or someone/something on the road. The branch over the tee on hole 2 should be remove or trimmed, or the tee should be moved to the right a little. Some of the holes could be stretched out a little with alternate pin placements and/or alternate tees. I think some of the holes could benefit from some slightly harder pin placements to make up for the short distance. Ok, this may look like a long list of suggestions, but, when it comes right down to it the course is just plain awesome to have. Thanks again to Jake and everyone else that was involved in making this course happen. After the Masters Cup I look forward to lending some of my elbow grease to the cause.

I don't recommend playing in your good shoes though. It was damp and there is a lot of loose dirt.

Oh yeah, and Mr. Scoggins, I found your red star stamped something or other (Destroyer?) on 16. If I don't see you at Dela soon I'll drop it into the lost and found.

Re:Aptos High course - 2008/04/24 07:33
Ok, the wind has a huge affect on this course. That first day there was no wind, 11 birdies. Yesterday it was blowing really good. I was 6 strokes worse in the first 4 holes. 1 bogey, 1 double bogey and 6 birdies for -3. Significant difference.

I played with Scott Keasey and between us we managed 4 ace runs. I have to say I was most excited about my throw on 7. We still don't know how it missed the basket .

Awesome after work disc golf fun.

Hey Stan,

Ok, I feel better now with my -4. I too played on a windy day, and thought, "If the wind is calm, I'll kill this course!" Much like the CSU courses, Aptos gets tougher as the wind picks up, and I think it will be windy there quite often. It causes severe punishment on the steeply sloped holes...

Cheers,
Steve

PS Jake added updated maps to the site but I cannot download full versions. The ones I made are both as jpegs and pdfs.
