Heheh. Shasta, your responses to the situation kept me from doing the same thing. I think one of us was going to react that way, it just happened to be you, this time .
Shasta Criss wrote: I like Stan too...and feel bad about how the round went on Saturday at the monthly. I too don't come to the Sunday doubles for the same reasons... definitely a shame. I'm sorry if I made your round un-fun at all on Saturday. I tried to keep my cool, but was sick of what's his name's bs. Its always a pleasure to see you at the course and play with you. I really think your response to scott's rant was very eloquently put and appreciate everything you have put into this great club and wonderful game!http://www.santacruzdisc.com

Re:August Monthly - 2008/08/05 10:27 Steve Lonhart wrote: To echo your sentiments, I just wanted to point out to those folks that are not yet deeply involved with the club that it is not really hard work, but it is time consuming. I want to make that distinction, since many people say they are unafraid of doing hard work, but it's really the hours (and days) of time that make the difference.
Donating time is the key--and being patient, since we are not well-oiled business operating at maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Instead, the club tends to fumble its way in the right direction, making mistakes but learning from them, and trying to be inclusive to a wide array of opinions. Being a democracy is the right thing to do, but it also means moving forward incrementally and slowly, as all sides and (often conflicting) opinions are heard and incorporated. To the outside, this may seem like a bumbling mess, but it's part of being a pluralistic club.
These are great points Steve. Sometimes it's hard to qualify it as work because it involves the course, people and sport that we love. It's really just the time that it takes.
We are really good at bumbling around *grin*. Our hope is that the more people that get involved, the more good ideas and directions that come to the surface.
The questions that were asked were good ones. I may have reacted harshly to exactly how they were asked, but I'm hoping it spurs more positive action than negative reaction. I know that Scott's frustration is shared by many others and is not completely unfounded. http://www.santacruzdisc.com

Hi All:
I'm jumping in on this kinda late, but very quickly here are a couple thoughts:
1- I've been in Scott's shoes, and have asked the same questions. (He's a good guy, by the way, and I'm sure didn't mean to insult anyone with his comments.)
Then I became VP this year and I saw the other side of things very clearly. The club does in fact crave more involvement from as many members as possible, and attending meetings is all you have to do to get started. I guarantee that if you are willing, you'll leave that first meeting with an assignment that will let you contribute. And we don't have any 'secret' meetings outside of the monthly club meetings. Attend a meeting, and you'll get all the info that we have. It's that simple.
2- I draw the analogy of the guy that gripes about the current president but didn't vote. You've no right to complain unless you are willing to jump in and help. Club dues do not go toward paying the people who give their time- it's ALL volunteer. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE MORE PEOPLE THAT ARE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THE CLUB, THE BETTER CHANCE WE HAVE AT PRESERVING THE COURSE. THEY CITY NEEDS TO SEE THAT WE ARE A LARGE, ORGANIZED GROUP.
3- As far as players taking the fun out of the game, my suggestion is to wait until the round is over and you've mellowed out, then share your feelings with the player in a non-confrontational manner. They'll probably thank you for pointing it out.

Thank you all for responding (Jack's right, I didn't mean to offend anyone)
I certainly appreciate having a DELA to playla, this course changed my life for the better in many ways.
my point is, I would like to attend meetings, and there are most likely others, who, if went, like Jack said, would leave with an assignment.
But TIME is the key, like Steve said, time is the issue with me getting to Santa Cruz at 6PM any day, used to be able to, but summer work is long, I randomly get time during the week to slip over the hill for some chain action..
But could always make time on a Saturday Morning!!
(btw Stan, last monthly i played, I did wait, but everyone took off, I know I didn't win, but have no idea how I did, other than poorly, I would have been happy to compile and post, in fact if we still have the results, I would be happy to compile and post to date)
So why not have a Saturday meeting, every OTHER month, I hear ya about having it at the course, but a Saturday meeting at Giavaneer's is WAY more do-able.
Once again, to clarify, I was not accusing anyone of failing, just trying to voice some obvious questions floating....
Also, this is great advice by Jack..... 3- As far as players taking the fun out of the game, my suggestion is to wait until the round is over and you've mellowed out, then share your feelings with the player in a non-confrontational manner. They'll probably thank you for pointing it out.
LET THE A-HOLES GO AWAY, DON'T LET EM KEEP YOU AWAY!
(BTW, the a-hole your all referring to, rarely comes to doubles anymore also, its not me is it? )
I'm off to play doubles.... CYA there!!!

another possible way to get more people to attend meetings might be to buy some kind of phone conferencing system or service. Have those who can meet in person meet in person, and those who can't could dial in and listen.
