I like Stan too...and feel bad about how the round went on Saturday at the monthly. I too don't come to the Sunday doubles for the same reasons... definitely a shame. I'm sorry if I made your round un-fun at all on Saturday. I tried to keep my cool, but was sick of what's his name's bs. Its always a pleasure to see you at the course and play with you. I really think your response to scott's rant was very eloquently put and appreciate everything you have put into this great club and wonderful game!

Good job Stan in responding to the questions. I am sure others feel similarly about Scott's views, and relatively few appreciate the behind-the-scenes efforts that you and other club members put in to this course and club.
To echo your sentiments, I just wanted to point out to those folks that are not yet deeply involved with the club that it is not really hard work, but it is time consuming. I want to make that distinction, since many people say they are unafraid of doing hard work, but it's really the hours (and days) of time that make the difference.
Donating time is the key--and being patient, since we are not well-oiled business operating at maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Instead, the club tends to fumble its way in the right direction, making mistakes but learning from them, and trying to be inclusive to a wide array of opinions. Being a democracy is the right thing to do, but it also means moving forward incrementally and slowly, as all sides and (often conflicting) opinions are heard and incorporated. To the outside, this may seem like a bumbling mess, but it's part of being a pluralistic club.
And many thanks to Jason for running the bag tags!
Cheers, Steve

The club is made up of all those who contribute, in one way or other. Paying dues means receiving communications, receiving a bag tag and t-shirt if so desired, but it also means contributing to course up-keep and being a proponent of disc golf at DeLaveaga.
As you say, becoming a member IS just the beginning. The officers are merely facilitators. There are four of us. The people behind the scenes are the ones who really keep things going for the club. The people who run the monthlys, the Masters Cup (two weekends), the people who work had to maintain the course, whether it is picking things up while playing, or spending hours on a weekend day to get the course in shape, the people who communicate with the city about ongoing issues, etc. are the people who make the course and the club what it is. These people donate time to keep it all going.
It is this contribution that keeps our course and our club in the good graces of our city leaders. It is more important now, to keep this moving in a positive way, as the city is moving forward with grant money to reduce erosion and sediment that runs off into the watershed. We need to come together and have some ideas about our course, so that when changes are made, we have a say in it. and WE are not four club officers, it is the membership - the players. It may be difficult to get to club meetings, but it may be worth the time if people want a say in how things are going to go.
If you want to be the one to encourage members to attend the sunday doubles, by all means, take the lead on that. I'm sure people would appreciate that effort. Jason has stepped up to bag tags, and many appreciate that effort. Stan stepped up as treasurer, and does much more than just account for the money.
Putting your questions out there, may be a good thing, as it may cause some people to take a look and see if and how they're helping out.

Thanks for such a detailed response to Scott's questions, Stan, Steve and Katie.
Thanks also to Scott for putting his questions out there. It may have been a rant, but I'm sure others may have the same questions, and it's good to get it out there for all of us.
Also a big, huge thanks to ALL the club members who donate so much of their time to deal with the myriad of issues associated with running the club and maintaining the course.
I'm sorry to hear there are personality issues making doubles & the monthly un-fun for some people, but I'm afraid that's bound to happen anywhere various personality types interact. If someone's continually being a jerk, calling them on it may help, as they may not realize how they're affecting others. Unfortunately, they also may just be a total jerk and not care, but I think they need to be made aware nonetheless. I hate to see one or two a-holes keeping nice people away. It's just not right. IMHO, it's the a-holes that should get ostracized.
Thanks again,
- JPB
