Ryan Ranch soon to have a course! - 2008/04/16 20:12
Hi All,

Mark Farrar mentioned that the Stinging Jellies Disc Golf Club in Monterey has plans on adding another course to Monterey. Here's an excerpt from a message posted on their message board this April:

"Good News from the City of Monterey!!! We have received the go-ahead
to start development of Monterey's newest Disc Golf Course at Ryan
Ranch Park (Name to be determined in the future, all suggestions are
welcome). This 75 acre park is a fantastic venue for a Disc Golf
Course. We hope to have 27 holes in here by the end of the year. As
of now, there are 24 objects (posts and tone poles) with as many tees
carved out. Course hours are to be determined this week. You may go
play this course if you know the layout. Guides can be made available
by contacting a club member who knows. The grass is tall and ticks
are common. The city and our club will be mowing and manicuring this
course in the next few weeks.

WE ARE NOT PERMITTED TO PARK AT THE GRILL AT RYAN RANCH ANYMORE. The
parking lot is at the top of Ryan Ranch Road off of Canyon Del Rey.
It is a locked gate and will be opened daily once a schedule with the
city can be determined. In the meantime, please park anywhere else
that does not raise any issues with neighbors/tenant companies at
Ryan Ranch.

When we approached the City with our proposal, their main concern was
smoking and the respect of all City park rules and regulations.
Please be reponsible disc golfers and abide by these rules as we are
under a 6 month trial basis for this course. There will be many eyes
on us during this time and in the future as there are many businesses
nearby who have enjoyed an uninhabited park for many years. Please be
courteous to any passers by and enlighten them to our great sport.

We will be accepting sponsorship donations for Tees and Baskets
in the near future. Right now our goal is to complete the course at
Don Dahvee to get it ready for its PDGA debut. There are 11 Basket
Sponsorships available and all Tees are available. Baskets go for
$350 FOR LIFE! Tee Sponsorships go for $150 FOR LIFE! Please contact
Jim Dixon or Steve Thomas for more information on how to make your
sponsorship donation.

Thanks for your continued support in helping us make Monterey a
destination Disc Golf Wonderland.

Sean Allen"

I've been working at Ryan Ranch for the last couple of months. I happened to meet up with Sean and Steve from the Monterey club and play the tentative layout a few weeks ago. This is going to be an amazing course. It has all the elements of a world class championship course and if it is done right will be the perfect compliment to De LaVeaga in the Monterey Bay area.

It sounds like the Monterey Bay area is getting ready to host the Worlds. We are at least getting enough championship level courses!

Does anyone have a map of the object course??

Re:Ryan Ranch soon to have a course! - 2008/08/05 21:28
Hi All,

Let me start by saying THANK YOU to the Stinging Jellies Club of Monterey and all the folks that helped put in another disc golf course on the Monterey Peninsula!! Couple Ryan Ranch with the two existing CSUMB courses, Carmel Middle School, and Don Dahvee DG Course, Monterey is becoming a disc golf destination!

I played the course today, August 5th, 2008 for the first time and by myself. I had a map I downloaded from (http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/montereydiscgolf/) and it was very necessary. Some of the holes have clear indications where the next tee is, but the map helps you locate the pins, so I say bring the map or be lost.

Overall I really liked the course. The jets flying overhead disrupted the peace and quiet of the site, and there was a motocross guy riding around, but its otherwise a secluded area. I parked in the visitor parking slots near the building entrance and headed downhill to tee 1. Tees are still fine silt, making footing awkward, but it looks like the club is going to fix that soon—ideally with cement. Anything else will not stay level in the fine, silty soil. Nice DGA baskets.

I really liked holes #6, 12, and 17. They mixed distance with some thought about what to do on the second shot. Holes #2, 5, and 10 were too simple and short. Holes #4, 8, 13, 15, and 18 were unimaginative, straight shots that can be reached by most folks with a 375 ft arm.

I’m looking forward to how this course evolves. It is a GREAT addition to the family of courses, and adds distance and thought into several of the shots. With a few tweaks, I think it could turn into a champion-level course, even something above a par 54 for 18 holes.

I had three birdies and one bogey, with 4 missed birdie putts in the 10 m circle and only one saver putt. So you can compare, I’m a 39 yr old, 980 rated player with a moderate distance arm.

Hole 1 (340 ft): level, straight shot over a few shrubs, no real danger at pin.
Hole 2 (218 ft): short, straight through shrubs at tee, or you can go over them--I used a thumber at 40% and went past about 20 ft.
Hole 3 (400 ft): bomb down a big hill, maybe 80 ft vertical drop, into huge open area. Hyzer bomb a midrange!
Hole 4 (435 ft): straight shot, but some shrubs in the way, and more open to left than right.
Hole 5 (235 ft): downhill, 25 ft vertical drop, oak tree backstop, so softly send a straight putter at the pin.
Hole 6 (410 ft): devious hole, with low ceiling to go under or hard overhand shot. Once past the oaks, fairway is open, going uphill 25 ft vertical. Not an easy par. I like this hole.
Hole 7 (260 ft): up hill 15 ft vertical, protected by oaks, so take anhyzer way to left and let winds blast the disc back to right and into open area around pin.
Hole 8 (370 ft): early trees line the tee area, but then opens up, straight shot, but do not hyzer to left too much or potential to get into trouble with slope and oaks.
Hole 9 (410 ft): straight, then natural fade to left, if you can huck it 400 ft. Otherwise safe bet is to be on road or to right of it, then easy angle to see pin.
Hole 10 (225 ft): blind uphill 20 ft vertical shot, pin is to right of opening.
Hole 11 (350 ft): lame and long walk from 10 pin to 11 tee, but you can use 18A/10B tee to play to 18 pin, then go on to tee for 11, which adds a 19th hole. 11 pin is on oak trees with low window. Need precise drive to have birdie look.
Hole 12 (520 ft): go left to right, then right to left at a blind pin. Tough hole, requires some planning to get the par 3 and two well-placed drives.
Hole 13 (355 ft): new tee is closer than old tee (which was harder and I prefer) and makes it a much easier hole. Should switch tee back to older, deeper spot.
Hole 14 (530 ft): Another go left to right, then straight ahead. Open fairway once you pass the trees.
Hole 15 (350 ft): pin is hidden down the hill a little, mainly by shrubs. Straight shot.
Hole 16 (255 ft): in a grove of oak trees, with a narrow entrance. Can get there easily with a thumber.
Hole 17 (540 ft): downhill, about 50 ft vertical drop, pin on the edge of a ravine. Bomb away, but stay upslope and to right so you have an easy upshot to lay up for the par. Only hole I bogeyed, and that was due to a lame upshot.
Hole 18 (350 ft): under an oak tree with a straight shot to the pin, with a dipping swale in between.
Cheers,
Steve Lonhart 20786

let me start by saying i really like Steve but...

I have played Ryan ranch about 8 times now and I love this course it is freakin awesome. while i agree there are a couple holes that seem easy on first play, throw slightly off target with a little grip lock and you end up in weeds well over your head. the harder holes will kick your ass if you dont throw smart I think steve playing by himself made the course seem more simple than it will play for most people (if you have seen Steve play you know how consistant he plays) I have played in some groups and seen this course wreak havoc on good players. right now the course record stands at -6 with multiple holes still not yet birdied. Jamie tuckey and I played on a beatiful sunny saturday and had the course to ourselves I would suggest the next time the crowds at dela get you down to check this place out you will not be disapointed

Jason

p.s. steve let me know next timeyou are going out there as I am always down to play there!
