Re:June 19, 2005 Doubles tournament - 2005/06/08 10:43
Have to agree with Dave T. and Marty here.

I do think a policy for semi-organized tournaments needs to be in place. Informal gatherings of golfers is one thing, but if your going to post a flyer and do all the work of getting sponsors and what not, you should at least make the club aware that it's happening. Mostly for scheduling purposes, so events don't overlap, but also for the reasons that marty mentioned. If something bad happens, not that it will of course, the club will be the one taking it on the chin, not DC.

IMHO, the policy should be something to the effect of if you want to run a semi-organized, non-PDGA event, then you work with the club to help you pick a date that doesn't conflict with anything. To me Sunday doubles is a long running tradition and I'm sure we'll have people show up who didn't realize that an organized event was happening, even though flyers are posted. Heck people show up during the masters and faultline every year claming they didn't know a tournament was happening that weekend. Those events are scheduled in January!

Funny how it's"public land" when you want it for yourself, and "Delaveaga"when it works to your advantage. I'm disapointed by that reaction.

I don't think the Saturday AM zoo group is a good example.

Sorry but they run against what is considered "good manners"on the course. It's simply too big of a group, and sets a bad example. Persoanly they are very nice folks, but they are not the best example of the requested ediqutte. To there criedit, many of them work on the course and contribute a lot.

DC did kinda go about it the wrong way, and DT has point that it's kind of late to condone it now. Especially if he's going to reffer to it as "punlic land" what has the "public"done for the course?

Sunday doubles has been happening since way before the iron ranger came around, and some of you. So you might not recall that for many , many years Sunday doubles was the same 20 guys. Not that the same 20 aren't there now, but there are 20 more as well.

On top of that, they are no longer the only 20 guys on the course. There's another 40-60 people out there. Those days are gone.

And that is why they are both good examples of why we do need better coordinatiopn of course events, Sunday Doubles crowd shoul be putting at least 5 into the box. I remember when Hagen tried to implement this a few yeras back. He got backlash from some very rude stingy people.

If you're taking enough money to write down names, you should be giving a cut to the course. Period. We should know better. You can't use your public non profit staus to your advantage when it works for you, and then turn around and abuse it without looking like another selfish fool.

"Support my cause because we're no-profit, but were not giving anything to the non-prof who supports us"? That is rude.

Personally, as some one who has run "infromal"events on the course for years, I don't see how it can really be done responsibly any more. Last years Turkey shoot was very difficult that way? The 24 hour challenge won't even go near it, even though I would love to have DDGC involved in someway. I'm not quite sure how to go about the Turkey shoot this year, but it certainley won't be without consideration for the club, or all the other people on the course.

Having an event alone does not give anyone permision to run over the course.

If DC wants to go ahead without supporting the club in his event, than the club should not support him back, and neither should you.
"Sponsor his event"? please how about giving him a free venue? Sponsorship enough?

Here are some California State Parks General Provisons:

4302. Use of Facilities, Payment.
No person shall use or be present in any portion of a unit under control of the Department of Parks and Recreation for which a use fee has been established by the Department, without paying such fee. The shall not apply to state officers and employees on official business nor to persons excepted by the Department for administrative reasons.

* Do we pay a use fee ourselves? If so, use fees should be asked for from tournament directors from their money pool based on number of players. $1/per player per round just like the iron giant. I suggest that be standard.

4319. Games and Recreational Activities.
No Person shall engage in games or recreational activities that endanger the safety of person, property, resources or interfere with visitor activities except as permitted by the Department.

* Any person engaged in an activity that injured them, played at their own risk of breaking state law.

4321. Assembly.
No person shall conduct or attend an assembly or public demonstration except by permission of the Department upon a finding that such activity would not substantially interfere with park use.

* Since we are the VOLUNTEERS that administrate the park, large groups/events should have an obligation to consult with us w/r/t planning an event to insure there are no conflicts with park use and visitors.

Personally, I really don't think DC thought it would be such a huge rigormorole to pull off a cool event. And, I plan on playing it. It's gonna be my father's day present to myself.

Well, this IS a hot topic...

I back down from the notion that a policy is not needed. Just trying to interject some 'devil's advocate' kind of input, and I am no longer willing to run with the devil.

Still, a word of caution on the approach. DC has surely put some energy into this thing. His feelings could suffer if we poopoo it all together. Can anyone think of a good way to bring him into the fold?

Maybe we can start by thanking him for bringing the issue to the fore... I think the approach is key here.

i don't think there is any need to 'put a stick in it', and DC and crew should definitely not be be made to feel intimated, afterall, they are great people, but, they should recognize the situation for what it is, and really just do the 'right thing' and make a contribution to the use of the course. if he still balks, oh well, i know i won't be playing.

if it were only a $1 per player, that would be all that would be asked of anyone 'whenever' they play, and would at least for this time help to 'set a precedent' for the future.

i recall speaking with DC last year when this event was posted. i asked if he was planning on making any contribution to the course, and i believe his response was that he was. whether he did or not, i don't know.

bottomline: the correct way to go about this, is to give something back to the facility that is being used....maybe DC wants to come out and help me mow today

I'd like to help with some mowing, but I can't get any of those damn mowers in the clubhouse to start!
