Help Send Me To Junior Worlds Benefit Tournament - 2005/06/26 21:49
Ben Caton and I are trying to make it out to junior worlds in flagstaff arizona and its gonna cost some money. SO! I've decided to put on a tournament to raise some funds to help us on our way. Im thinking either on the Saturday after independence day or the following week on the 9th or 16th of july (Is there some way I could reseve the course?) It will be a random draw doubles tournament at $10 a person with a 50% payout to 1st, 2nd, and maybe 3rd (depending on the turnout). I am planning on trying to get some prizes donated from what once was Santa Cruz Disc (ie Rob Harding) and Outdoor World for things like most birdies, most bogies, most lost discs (NO SACRIFICES!) My uncle Matt works for the County and has a lot of friends that are looking to play a fun tournament during the week. He can get a pretty good turnout from his acquiantences there plus he plays a twice weekly basketball game with his friends (many of which are disc golfers and ultimate players). I am going to make a flyer for him to put up in his workplace and I will make extras to put up at DeLa, Outdoor World, and maybe DJ's too. I am thinking we could get a good 25-35 people out to play. Ideas? Comments? Donations? let me know what you guys think! Chris Edwards p.s. seriously, donations would be awesome...

can't be the 9th dude, that's the monthly day. I'd play in your tourney though. Sounds great! What I don't understand is, how you get so bored at 17 or 18 or whatever age it is you are that you resort to using the internet.... ??? go out and play on the freeway

Hey Chris, I'm glad to hear that you are interested in a holding a benefit tourney, but a little bummed to hear that you would be the only ones to benefit. I think that there may be other ways to raise money for your trip (for example, I work *a joke*)...
In regard to 'reserving the course', we only shut things down for the three major tournament weekends every year (Masters Am, Masters Pro, Faultline). Shutting down the course results in many people coming up and not being able to use it. We usually post signs more than a month in advance to do this; so course reservation is out of the question.
I appreciate your getting in touch with the club about this potential event. DDGC involvement in tournaments at the course has been an issue recently within the club. I think that you have the general support of DDGC members who all would like to see two good young players like you and Ben have the experience of going to the worlds.
BTW, while on the topic of money, we need to talk about your recent upgrade from Junior club membership... Are you planning on playing the Tag Night on Thursday??

I stand corrected. Yes, pretty sure is pretty good. Sorry young'n! my bad. You should call some businesses and ask for sponsorships. -- maybe give some clinics on driving for some $$$. How much would you charge me for a driving clinic?

Yes. The monthly is on July 2.
This weekend!
Ed pretty much said everything regarding holding a tournament.
Here's an idea - rather than a tournament, why don't you guys do something like a "play-a-thon" (similar to the 24 hour challenge). Go out and get sponsorship for as many holes as you can play within a specific time frame.
Or heck...you could just ask all those people who you would've asked to participate in the tournament if they'd be willing to help sponsor your trip to the Worlds. That would probably be just as effective, a lot less work and it wouldn't require any permits.
In exchange for their sponsorship, maybe you could offer them something in return. Disc Golf lessons or something.
I remember one year when I couldn't afford to play in the Master's Cup and a couple of friends of mine "sponsored" me. They gave me the money and I wore a T-shirt they had made for the event.
There are lots of ways to raise money.
