The Butt Cans - 2007/08/06 20:25
1. Like alcohol, smoking is not permitted in the park.
2. By providing cans for people to 'park their butts', we are in direct conflict with the Santa Cruz Parks & Rec policy about smoking (seen #1). Trust me...as a smoker I check for things like ashtrays in hotel rooms. If I SEE anything that indicates it's "okay to smoke here", I'll light it up baby.
3. The cans are ineffective. There are just as many butts as there were before.
4. They have become defacto trash receptacles.
5. Once they are full, they just attract more trash. This morning I found one which was full and a bag full of trash sitting right next to it.
6. I'm actually picking up MORE trash now that I was before. During my round this morning, I picked up close to half a kitchen sized trash bag ON THE FIRST SIX HOLES.
7. You can't depend on club members or anyone else to clean them out. I don't know how many times I've played behind groups of people I KNOW that I've played with before (and they play the course nearly every day) and I'm picking up trash behind them. It's one thing if they miss stuff in the bushes, but when it's around the tee it's a completely different thing...
8. If you've ever worked in the "parks" system (city OR national), you would know that more trash receptacles simply attract more trash.
Conclusion: The butt cans have to go - especially from a 'legal' standpoint. If we are to be the care takers for the course, we have to show that we are not encouraging illegal behaviour. Other trash cans must be kept to a minimum in favor of teaching people to take their crap home to dispose of it.
IF IT WASN'T AT THE COURSE BEFORE YOU GOT THERE - IT DOESN'T BELONG THERE. TAKE IT HOME !!!
Have a nice day.
