DeLaveaga Course Resortation Project - Hole Closures! Print E-mail
User Rating: / 1
PoorBest

Restoration work will begin at Upper DeLaveaga Park this winter aimed at reducing erosion and run off into the watersheds below the park.

DDGC met with the City Parks and Rec Department last week and got some information about the planned restoration work. The first phase will involve ripping the surface, mulching, and seeding along the Hole 13 and Hole 16 corridor at the disc golf course.

As a way of helping the success of this project, DDGC has agreed to temporarily close Holes 13 through 16 for about 4 to 5 months this winter to allow the area to be restored. When the project is finished, there should be native grasses growing in the now open soil areas of Hole 13. DDGC and the City will also build a trail through Hole 13 to limit future impact from foot traffic. The idea would be for players to use the trail until they are near their disc.

The start date is not yet certain. The City wants to wait until we've had 1 to 2 inches of rain to soften the surface. At that point Parks and Rec staff will begin their project. The hole closures will occur just prior to the start of the restoration work. We will remove the baskets for these four holes and post appropriate signage. If necessary, a temporary fence will also be used.

We plan to have the holes open in time for the Am Masters Cup at the end of April.

DDGC needs your help:
1. Volunteer for trail building and other maintenance projects.
2. Stay out of the restoration area once it has been closed until it's open.
3. Help to keep other people out of that area once it's closed.

This is crucial and on the critical path of saving the course for permanent use, so please help.

Holes 13 through 16 have been officially

The baskets were pulled this evening and are being stored in a secure, undisclosed location. Signs have been posted to inform players of the temporary closures.

Parks and rec will be contacted tomorrow to inform them that the restoration area is prepared for their work. Many more details will be shared and discussed at the monthly DDGC meeting this Wednesday.

See you all soon,

Hole Closure to Begin on Sunday
Written by ed on 2005-12-02 19:35:24
Starting around 4:00 or 5:00PM Sunday, December 4th, DDGC holes 13 through 16 will be temporarily closed for the winter season.

That day has arrived. The City Parks and Rec Department has informed me that it plans to start the earth work for the hole 13 through 16 restoration project (see earlier thread) next week. Although I wasn't given a specific day, I think we can assume that they'll start grading on Monday. Beginning at the end of the day on Sunday, this area will be closed until mid to late April.

We should get a crew together to remove the pins on Sunday afternoon. I'll get the signage posted this weekend.

I realize that some have voiced concerns about the general plan from the City and, although I didn't make it that clear in the earlier posts, this closure is a pilot study, has been planned by an experienced and well respected consultant, and is likely the first of many temporary closures to address different areas of the course.

No issues around alternate holes have been resolved with the City. We can start working that out with them next week.

This will be a topic of discussion at next Wednesday's club meeting. I would encourage all those who want to have input on this process to attend so that your ideas can be heard.
my 2 or 3 cents

Well thanks for the reply back Ed.
I know I am no expert in trail building, just thought I would give some of my thoughts on the restoration project.
Im sure the person the city hired for the project is quite capable of doing the job.
Least I would hope so...

That's Right

The City has hired a consultant to plan this restoration work. There will be some breaking up of soil which could increase erosion, but the plan is to put waddles (those bound together hay things around the parking lot) in the project area to reduce the flow of dirt out of the project area.
The future trail through 13 will be intended to lessen the traffic on the restored area. The idea would be to follow the trail until you are near your disc and then go off the trail. It sounds OK to me.

The consultant hired by the City, John Gilcrest, is a top gun with lots of experience in this type of project. He also consults to UCSC. I think we should trust that he knows what to do.

Please come to this Wednesday's meeting with any other helpful comments.

hmm

Well I am on agreement with the restoration project. Though some points in the article post don't really make since.
Like for instance:
Build a trail thru hole 13??
(isnt there already a wide open field to hole 13 and thru 13 would actually mean straight thru the basket?(how would that happen?)
Lastly:
Ripping the surface/mulching/seeding?
Isnt that in reality adding to the erosion of the course and messing with mother nature?

still though I am for it, just not in agreement.
I will help out all I can, where it be volunteer work or keeping players out of the area.
