Restoration Work on Holes 13 through 16 Print E-mail
User Rating: / 5
PoorBest

UPDATE - Holes #13-16 are back in play. #17 (the lady) has been removed.

A big thank you to Ed Buskirk and the Club for working with the City of Santa Cruz on this restoration project!

In December 2005, Holes 13 through 16 at DeLaveaga Disc Golf Course were temporarily closed for restoration work.  The City of Santa Cruz Parks and Rec Department cultivated the ground surface in this closed area, added organic soil amendments, and planted native grass seed in an effort to limit surface erosion.

The grass came in well and overall, the project was a success.  It is our hope that the grass will regerminate this winter to fill in even more and will help to keep the soil in place during the upcoming rainy season.

This area of the course was reopened for public use in August 2006.  A path of wood chips has been constructed across the 13 and 16 corridor to help limit the impact from foot traffic.  Some reseeding may be done this winter to help the area fill in.

Watch for other changes coming in the next few months, including more temporary closures on other holes and upgrades to keep the soil around the parking lot in place.

Thanks for the support of numerous club members and course users during the restoration work.  We can't do this without your support!

Path taking shape
Written by Understable_Ed on 2006-08-14 09:27:32
Thanks to Daviar, KC, Stan, Russ, and Rob (and I'm sure a bunch of others) the path through the Hole 13 and Hole 16 restoration area is taking shape. The path was moved slightly from the original location because it was noted that a more natural path was developing slightly south of the original one.

PLEASE, USE THIS PATH WHEN CROSSING THIS AREA!! or else... ;)

Thanks for your hard work, you guys!!

Thanks to everyone for STAYING THE COURSE.

Pitch In
Written by Understable_Ed on 2006-08-04 09:48:14
OOOps...
That should have been "just pitch in"...

By the way, I think that we'll be having a work party after the monthly and on Sunday, if the chips arrive today....

UPDATE August 2006
Written by Understable_Ed on 2006-08-04 08:43:18
As of August 4, 2006 holes 13 through 16 have been reopened for public play. The restoration work done by the City appears to have been successful. The fairways of holes 13 and 16 both have a full head of grass.

PLEASE, minimize your impact on holes 13 and 16 by staying on the trail until you are near your disc, going to your lie, and then returning to the the trail.

Watch for upcoming work days. Chips will be delivered starting today or early next week. Bring a wheelborrow or just pitch. We'll have alot of chips to move to make the trail across 13 and 16.

Thanks for your support and patience!! :grin

Soil Amendments
Written by Understable_Ed on 2006-01-19 10:00:07
Yes Daviar, soil amendments are mulch (I was quoting the Biologist working for the City). It sounds better than detritus, doesn't it?

WHAA?

What the heck are "soil amendments"? Is that a fancy word for "mulch"? :?
Oh well.

:sigh Altough i wish these holes didn't have to close, i guess its for the better. I'm glad that the city has taken action in these areas so that eventually we can play back on the holes. So lets help out the process by not walking or playing in these areas. Grow grass grow!
